My Mom's Medical Mystery

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

My mom hadn't been feeling very well the past couple days. She had the classic symptoms of Shingles, however, the pain got so bad that she wanted to go to the emergency room yesterday afternoon. She was in so much pain that she could hardly get out of bed, and her temperature was so high that it felt as if she was radiating heat.

After a lot of testing (X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, blood tests, etc.), the results came back without anything wrong. The doctor thought it might be her gallbladder, but the tests proved otherwise. She was prescribed medicine for Shingles and came home last night.

While I was in class today my sister texted me and said Mom had to go back to the hospital. The pain was just too much for her to handle, and the medicine they prescribed her wasn't helping enough.

The doctor currently has her drugged up on morphine, which is helping incredibly, but she's very loopy and disorientated. She called earlier and said the nurses are very nice and are taking good care of her. I could tell she "wasn't all there," but she felt well enough to talk on the phone at least. That's a good sign.

She's staying in the hospital overnight tonight, or until the doctor figures out what to do with her. Maybe he will conclude that she has Shingles for sure, after ruling out every other possibility. We'll see what tomorrow brings...
