Are You Ready for iOS 5?

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Apple is releasing iOS 5 TODAY! I'm waiting patiently, but starting to get antsy.

Here are the features I'm most excited about:

Notification Center
Everyone gets all kinds of notifications on their iPhone: emails, texts, friend requests, tweets, and more. With Notification Center, you can keep track of them all in one convenient location. Just swipe down from the top of any screen to enter Notification Center. Choose which notifications you want to see. New notifications appear briefly at the top of your screen, without interrupting what you’re doing, and the lock screen displays notifications so you can activate the appropriate app with just the swipe of a finger.

Reminders

Reminders lets you organize your life in to-do lists -- complete with due dates and locations. Say you need to remember to wrap a friend's birthday present when you get home. Reminders can be location based, so you’ll get an alert as soon as you pull into your driveway. (How cool is that?!)

Camera

With iOS 5 you can open the Camera app right from the Lock screen. Use grid lines, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and single-tap focus and exposure locks to compose a picture as you go. Then press the volume-up button to snap your photo in the nick of time. (I've been waiting for this feature for so long. It can be so frustrating trying to take a picture and you don't hit the area of the screen directly where the camera "button" is.)

Photo Crop & Enhance

Now you can turn your snapshots into frame-worthy photos in just a few taps. Crop, rotate, enhance, and even remove red-eye without leaving the Photos app. Also organize your photos in albums -- right on your device.

Wi-Fi Sync

Wirelessly sync your iOS device to your Mac or PC over a shared Wi-Fi connection. Every time you connect your iOS device to a power source (say, overnight for charging), it automatically syncs and backs up any new content to iTunes. (This is probably going to be my favorite feature!)

iCloud

iCloud automatically stores your content so it’s always available to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. It gives you access to your music, apps, latest photos, and more from whichever device you happen to be using. And it keeps your email, contacts, and calendars up to date across all your devices. No syncing required. No management required. iCloud does it all for you. It's like your own personal cloud in the sky where you can store everything you want. (Did I mention it's free with iOS 5?!)
