Live. Love. Laugh. Blog.
It's been a year since Reba, our Golden Retriever, passed away. It feels like it happened just yesterday.

She was the first female dog my family had and our second Golden Retriever.

Cody was her best friend from the very moment we brought her home.

When we brought Sophie home in 2009, she and Reba got along just fine.

She loved to sleep between my legs while I was lying on the floor doing my homework, and she always found Cody as a comfortable headrest.

This was her "pet me" pose.

Out of all the dogs, she was the only one that would actually fetch the ball. Cody would just run and pick it up, and Sophie would just run, but Reba always brought it back.

I didn't have this blog star ago, so here's what happened to her:

In the beginning of December, Reba had been vomiting for about 24 hours, and concerned, we took her to the vet the next day. He did some x-rays and saw some foreign objects in her intestines. One surgery later, the doctor found a twist tie, dental floss, and a broken Christmas ornament inside her. He stitched her up, expecting the removal of the foreign objects to make her better.

She wasn't any better a week later, so the vet did a second surgery. After some invasive incisions, he found that her intestines were adhering to each other where the ornament had cut her. He had to remove 4 inches of her intestines, thinking that would fix everything.

About another week later, Reba's incision wasn't healing, so we took her back to the animal hospital, and she was severely infected. The vet put her on heavy antibiotics and tried several other things, but nothing worked.

On December 27, 2011, we went to see her, and she was worse than ever. She was so skinny that we could see her ribs, and her incision was leaking fluids. Despite all this, she still managed to wag her tail for us.

We decided as a family that we had to put Reba out of her misery that night. We fought for her life, and she was trying her hardest to survive. But, even if she did survive, her digestive system would never have been the same and Reba would never be herself again.

Reba was the first dog I ever had to experience losing by death. When I was younger, we had to sell our dogs when we couldn't keep them anymore, but that was nothing compared to this. She was only 5 years old, and would have lived a lot longer if she wouldn't have eaten that Christmas ornament. It was so random, too, because she would never eat anything weird like that. She didn't even chew on shoes. It came so unexpectedly.

I wrote a poem about Reba last year after she died:
She paws at you when she wants attention
Lies down on the floor and strikes her pose
She nudges your hand for you to pet her
You end up with hair all over your clothes

She whines for you if you've been gone for a while
Sophie picks on her day and night
When you pet her you'll see her smile
In her world, everything's alright

Her favorite spot is on the couch
She lays by my feet when I study
Watch out, she'll lick you on your mouth
She'll forever be my homework buddy

She makes sure she's the first to be fed
She lets you know what's on her mind
She cuddles with Cody on their bed
Her name is Reba, she's one of a kind

Rest in peace, Reba.
Yesterday was a fantastic Christmas Day.

On Christmas Eve, my parents and I went to the Christmas Eve candlelit service at our church and it was everything I remember it to be. My favorite part is when everyone lights their candle and holds it up in the air.

After we got home from church, we baked more Christmas cookies! That was the 3rd time we've made cookies this year, so that's almost 300 cookies! I love it.

Christmas Day was wonderful. We woke up around 10 and opened the presents under the tree. We let the dogs unwrap theirs first. Well, Howie did most of the unwrapping for everyone. He loves to rip up paper, so it was kind of a dream come true for him.

The best moment of opening presents was seeing my mom's face after she opened the calendar I made her. She saw the front of it (a picture of Howie as a puppy) and immediately teared up.

After unwrapping the presents, we had Christmas dinner. Mom made a turkey and a ham along with corn casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing, potato casserole, green beans, deviled eggs, and pistachio pudding. It was delicious!

Then, after a big meal, Simon and I watched Mary Poppins, took a nap in the middle of it, finished it, then watched Just Friends (one of my favorite holiday movies)!

Of course, later, we had to eat some leftovers and play video games: Mario Kart 64.

I got all 8 seasons of Will & Grace as a gift from my parents, so Simon and I watched 3 episodes and fell asleep sometime after that.

I received some other amazing gifts such as the Gaga x Terry Richardson book, The Monster Ball DVD of Lady Gaga's concert in Madison Square Garden, a fantastic new robe (with a hood!), house slippers, gift cards for iTunes and Tijuana Flats, a really useful portable scanner (I linked it because I don't know how to describe it, haha), gloves, Bath and Body Works lotion, The West Side Story DVD and soundtrack, pajamas, money for shopping, Sperry's, and a few other things that are escaping my mind at the moment.

It was a wonderful first day of Christmas, and I couldn't ask for better friends and family.

2011 is the year of Adele. The singer sat atop the music world this year with the number-one single, number-one video and, unless something miraculous takes place in the next week, the number-one album.

"21" is on its way to be the the first album to sell five million copies in 12 months since Usher's "Confessions" in 2004.

Based on Nielsen SoundScan, these are the top-selling albums of 2011:
  1. Adele, 21 - 4,817,000 copies sold
  2. Lady Gaga, Born This Way - 1,973,000
  3. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV - 1,776,000
  4. Jason Aldean, My Kinda Party - 1,389,000
  5. Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More - 1,328,000
  6. Jay-Z/Kanye West, Watch The Throne - 1,124,000
  7. Michael Buble, Christmas - 1,038,000
  8. Beyonce, 4 - 956,000
  9. Lady Antebellum, Own The Night - 908,000
  10. Katy Perry - Teenage Dream - 907,000
I had just gotten done baking Christmas cookies when I noticed Sophie in the family room. I went to take her picture just because she looked so cute (sitting up), then she laid down and I got this adorable picture of her. She does this all the time. It's like she knows her picture is being taken.

P.S. Yes, we have stockings for our dogs. :)
My mom and I baked Christmas cookies from scratch twice in the past 4 days! It's one of my favorite parts of Christmas.

The second batch turned out better than the first because we switched from real butter to margarine. The margarine gave everything a better flavor and made the cookies crisper.

There's nothing like baking sugar cookies at Christmas time!

Round 1
Round 2

I've heard a lot about Pinterest, but never took the time to find someone to invite me (since it's invite only). Well, today I posted a status on facebook asking if any of my friends who have Pinterest would invite me. Best decision ever.

If you don't know what Pinterest is, it's basically a new way of bookmarking pages, and sharing bookmarks with your friends/followers. You can organize your "pins" into different "boards," which are essentially just different categories. For example, I have a "Dream Home" folder containing all types of interior design that I love.

Pinterest's description on the website itself is:

"Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and share their favorite recipes."

I can see myself using Pinterest all the time. They even have an iPhone app!
Yesterday was a very nerve-wracking day. I had to present a portfolio consisting of 12 of my strongest projects to a panel of 5 professors. Based on 3 papers I turned in, my portfolio, and presentation, they decided whether or not I can continue on in the program.

We were told it would take up to two weeks to receive an e-mail stating whether or not we passed the review.

Well, today I got the e-mail....and I PASSED!!!

Such a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, and now I'm on Christmas Break! :)
The next two weeks of school are going to brutal, so I won't be writing on here for a little while.

I'll update everything immediately after!
Today, we began our Christmas decorating!

First thing in the morning, we went to Marsh to pick up a tree, and it was only $26! Last year we went to a farm and the tree cost us over $100! It's a Donner Fir, I believe, and it smells so good.

Anyways, here are some before and after shots.

So pretty!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and you get to spend plenty of time with your families!

I'm so thankful for everyone in my life and everything I have.

Gobble gobble!
Yesterday I made a pretty big decision. I quit my job. If you know me well enough, you know where I worked, so to avoid name dropping let's just call this place I worked "The Superstore."

I walked in yesterday, gave management my letter of resignation, and never looked back. I was going to give them 2 weeks notice, but I have so many project due dates coming up with school, and I couldn't afford to lose the time I would have to work on them.

Reasons I quit:
School
It's getting more intense as the years go on, and I can see my grades being hindered by my job. School is more important than working when I can live without the money.
Stress
Working at "The Superstore" is so stressful as a Seasonal/Lawn and Garden Associate. Nothing is ever the same, and you're expected to do everything; even things that aren't in your job description. For example: unload thousands of boxes worth of semi trucks, push carts (in 6 inches of snow, that was fun...), stock milk in the dairy cooler (in shorts and a t-shirt), and clean the bathrooms and wipe puke up off the floor when no one can find the janitor.
Pay
I didn't get paid enough for all the work I did. Plain and simple.
Management
Their management is so unorganized. One moment one manager would ask me to do something, and the next moment another manager would ask me to do something else without knowing I already had a project I was working on. "The Superstore" moves their managers around to different departments every so often. They did it right before I received my 1- and 2-year reviews, so the manager I had been working with for the past 6 months didn't even give me my review. The new guy who I only knew for about 2 weeks gave me less of a raise than I deserved (twice).
Unhappiness
I haven't been happy with my job for probably 6 months or so. I kept telling myself that it would get better, but it didn't. I'm not much of a quitter, but I know when to walk away, and the time came.

I started work there Valentines Day of 2009, so it still hasn't hit me that I'm not actually going to have to go into work this weekend. I will miss  the people I worked with, but I'm glad to be done working at "The Superstore."

Ok, I'm done venting.

Last night was the awards ceremony for the National Kitchen and Bath Association Student Design Competition, and I won second place for my school!

My professor decided to use the competition as an assignment for class, and we could enter the competition if we wanted to after finishing the project. I almost didn't enter because I didn't have enough time to redraw all my designs by hand, but when I found out we could enter AutoCAD drawings, I did!

Oh! And one of my best friends, Tori, won first place for IUPUI, and there is no one I'd be happier to lose to.

So exciting!
I go through phases when I listen to songs over and over again until I get sick of them. Here are my top 7 songs of the moment that I can't get enough of.
  1. It Will Rain - Bruno Mars
  2. 1 + 1 - Beyoncé
  3. Don't Hold Your Breath - Nicole Scherzinger
  4. We Found Love - Rihanna
  5. I Like It Like That - Hot Chelle Rae
  6. What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger) - Kelly Clarkson
  7. With Ur Love - Cher Lloyd feat. Mike Posner

Today, Lindsay admitted to violating her probation, and the judge sentenced her to jail! She must surrender by November 9th and begin serving 30 days without eligibility for house arrest or early release!

Twitter was set ablaze today with rumors of ADELE having throat cancer, but a source has yet to be cited to prove that it's true.

It is confirmed, however, that ADELE will be having surgery on her throat in the coming days. After suffering a vocal hemorrhage and being forced to cancel concerts left and right, she will now undergo throat surgery on her vocal cords. Her remaining 2011 tour dates have also been cancelled, though fans can rest easy knowing she is expected to make a full recovery.

Adele’s latest album “21” has bee a fixture on music charts this year and earned her loads of accolades and award nominations. She's been atop the Billboard 200 for 13 weeks! Her album, "21" is the best-selling album of the year with over 4 million copies sold in the US.

Get well soon, ADELE!

I'm a pretty big scary movie buff. I still have plenty to see (like Hitchcock's Pyscho), but here's a list of my top 10 favorites.

What's your favorite scary movie?

The Shining

The Ring

For one of my college classes, we are required to enter a design competition called the PAVE the Way 3D Design Challenge. The challenge is:

"Design, develop, and construct a branded store fixture, that is, when utilized, no larger than a 36-inch x 36-inch square footprint and 84 inches high. This fixture is to provide a makeover station for a specific existing brand of cosmetics. The fixture should communicate the chosen brand. You may choose any brand of cosmetics found in department stores or branded retail stores. Your design solution should be concise and constructed with care and professionalism. The fixture must be able to morph from a compact, protected unit when stored into a fully functional makeover station when in use. We encourage you to design a creative solution for the functionality when utilized and the structure when stored."

I chose MAC Cosmetics.

This is what the fixture will look like completely closed a locked.

The below image shoes all doors open, and how the makeup will be displayed. The top part of the fixture is for MAC's Viva Glam campaign, or any other featured MAC product.

This shows the back, still completely open.

Below is the back with doors closed, how it would be displayed in a store or shopping mall.

And finally, this is the left/front view, the same way it will be displayed while in use by a makeup artist.

What do you think?

I hope I win or at least get an honorable mention!
